How We Built a Scam-Proof Cat Breeder Marketplace

Every year, thousands of people lose money to pet scams. They find a cute kitten online, send a deposit, and never hear from the "breeder" again. The photos were stolen. The cattery didn't exist. The money is gone.

When we learned how bad this problem really was, we didn't wait for a client to ask us to fix it. We built the solution ourselves.

GoodCattery is a passion project—a marketplace we created because the problem needed solving. It runs independently, but it's built with the same tools, standards, and obsessive attention to detail we bring to every Gideon Codeworks project.

Here's how we built it.

The Problem Is Bigger Than You Think

Pet scams aren't a minor inconvenience. According to the Better Business Bureau, Americans lose over $2 million annually to pet-related fraud. And that's just what gets reported.

The scam is simple and brutal:

  • Scammer creates a fake breeder website or social media page
  • They steal photos of kittens from real breeders
  • Buyer falls in love, sends a $500-$2,000 deposit
  • Scammer disappears. No kitten. No refund. No recourse.

Maine Coons are especially targeted because of their high prices ($1,500-$3,000+). Scammers know buyers are willing to pay—and wait—for a quality kitten.

The existing solutions? Basically none. Facebook groups try to warn people. Reddit threads share known scammers. But there was no centralized, verified marketplace where buyers could shop with confidence.

Until now.

What GoodCattery Needed

The client came to us with a clear vision: create a trusted marketplace specifically for Maine Coon breeders and buyers. Not just a directory—a platform with real protection built in.

They needed:

  • 1. Breeder Verification — Every cattery vetted before they can list. TICA/CFA registration checks, health testing reviews, veterinary references.
  • 2. Secure Payments — Deposits held in escrow until the kitten is delivered. Buyer protection guaranteed.
  • 3. Scam Database — A community-driven resource to identify and expose fraudulent "breeders" before they steal from anyone else.
  • 4. Application Management — Tools for breeders to manage inquiries, track applications, and communicate with potential buyers.

This wasn't a simple directory website. This was a full marketplace platform with payment processing, user authentication, verification workflows, and admin controls.

The Tech Behind Trust

We built GoodCattery on a modern stack designed for security, speed, and scale:

Frontend + PWA

Next.js with React, built as a Progressive Web App. Installable on any device, works offline, feels native. SEO-optimized so breeders get found.

Payments

Stripe Connect for marketplace payments. Funds held securely until delivery confirmed. Automatic payouts to breeders.

Verification System

Custom workflow for document submission, manual review, and approval. Bad actors don't make it through.

Community + Scam Database

Community features for breeders and buyers to connect. Scam database with community-submitted reports and admin moderation.

The verification system was the most critical piece. Anyone can claim to be a breeder. We built a process that requires:

  • Proof of TICA or CFA registration
  • Documentation of health testing protocols
  • Veterinary references (we actually call them)
  • Photo verification to prevent stolen images

Only after passing this review can a cattery list on the platform. The barrier is intentionally high. That's the point.

Why This Matters

GoodCattery isn't just another pet website. It's infrastructure for an industry that desperately needed it.

For buyers: Shop with confidence. Every cattery is verified. Every payment is protected. No more gambling with deposits.

For breeders: Stand out from the scammers. The verification badge means something. Manage applications professionally. Get paid securely.

For the industry: A rising tide lifts all boats. When buyers trust the process, they're more willing to pay fair prices for quality kittens from ethical breeders.

The Result

GoodCattery launched and is now live at goodcattery.com.

The platform is actively onboarding verified breeders, building its scam database, and creating a safer marketplace for Maine Coon enthusiasts.

But we're not stopping there. GoodCattery is evolving into a full Progressive Web App (PWA)—installable on any device, works offline, and feels like a native app. We're also building out community features so breeders and buyers can connect, share experiences, and help each other navigate the world of pedigree cats.

It's not just a marketplace anymore. It's becoming a community.

Why We Did It For Free

We get asked this a lot. Why volunteer hundreds of hours on a project with no invoice?

Because some problems are worth solving regardless of payment. Because we have skills that can genuinely help people. And because building things that matter is why we got into this business in the first place.

Not every project can be pro bono. We're a business, and we have bills to pay. But when the right opportunity comes along—when we can use what we know to protect people from getting scammed—we're going to say yes.

GoodCattery is one of those projects. And we're proud to be part of it.

If you have an idea for a platform, marketplace, or tool that solves a real problem—we'd love to hear about it. Let's talk.
